A total of 75,000 fish from the turtle and fish pond at the Maha Muni Buddha Image were released into the Ayeyawady River, as reported by U Thein Oo, the Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Maha Muni Buddha Image in Chanmyathazi Township, Mandalay Region.
The pond at the Image is teeming with fish, including many Carnivorous catfish. In collaboration with the Department of Fisheries, the Board of Trustees conducts pond cleaning every three months. However, due to an increase in fish spawning, a portion of the fish needs to be released into the Ayeyawady River.
“Pilgrims often release fish into the pond, leading to overcrowding among the fish. Some die due to fighting, while others suffer from a lack of food. Therefore, periodic releases are necessary. We consulted with the Department of Fisheries about six months ago. After releasing all the fish and cleaning the pond water, we plan to introduce pet fish,” explained U Thein Oo.
Presently, there are over 150,000 fish in the pond. On 16 January, more than 75,000 fish were released, with the remaining a half scheduled for release in May. According to regulations, Carnivorous catfish cannot be released into streams, creeks, and rivers without permission.
