Former lethwei champion advises holding more matches for new blood

Myanmar traditional boxing (lethwei) competitions are required to nurture new blood, suggested former champion Lone Chaw.
He works as a trainer for new players and is still often seen fighting in the boxing rings.

“What is required is a lot of competitions. There are more events now compared to our time. As far as I know, there are three big fights, not ordinary ones, in Thailand every week. In our country, we even have to struggle to host one competition per month. So, we need to hold many more competitions,“ he said.

Although he is satisfied with the new players, their training is weak because they play so few games, he commented.
“As long as it is lethwei (for boxers who go abroad to play), it’s okay. Foreigners and Myanmar players can fight. Foreigners are trained to fight in Thailand. I recommend both foreign players fighting in Myanmar lethwei and Myanmar players going abroad to fight. Just fight to the best of their ability,” he said.

He believes that Myanmar lethwei industry would be promoted if more matches could be held.
