Domestic tourism increased in early January this year compared to the same period last year, that is why the industry is expected to be promising, said U Naung Naung Han, chairman of Myanmar Tourism Entrepreneurs Association.

Since the late 2023, domestic tourism has bounced back and no decline has been seen till January 2024, he said.

“At present, the arrival of visitors to Bagan has regained to some extent. Visiting has increased since December holidays and is still increasing now. The travel sector will develop as much as there is political stability. If the country is stable, the tourism industry is likely to be healthy until February, March and April,” said U Naung Naung Han.

Currently, Bagan, Chaungthar, Ngwesaung, Kalaw, Inle and Pyin Oo Lwin are major destinations, and the arrival of foreign tourists also increased in early January, he said.

“The majority of foreign tourists are from Russia, Thailand and China,” he said.
