About 100,000 tonnes of Myanmar sesame was exported to Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Korea in 2022-2023 financial year, including major destination to China, according to Myanmar Beans, Pulses, Maize and Sesame Seeds Merchants Association.

“Of last year’s export volume about 100,000 tonnes, most were exported to China,” said an official from the association.

Under recent market conditions, the use of locally-produced edible oil crops has grown and local trading has begun doing well, he said. Currently, white sesame gets better price compared to black sesame, he added.

“There are imports of palm oil in order to fulfil the domestic consumption. Prices have begun rising these years, that is why edible oil crops produced locally have been now used wider. As a result, local businesses have started to bloom. So it seems the use of domestically produced crops becomes growing,” he said.

Myanmar grows paddy mainly as well as beans, pulses and edible oil crops. In 2022-23 FY, the country planted 3.86 million acres of sesame and yielded 30.53 million baskets.
