As prohibited food items were seized from Myanmar re-entry workers in South Korea, the Public Overseas Employment Agency Employment Permit System (POEA-EPS) warned that they should be avoid to facilitate smooth re-entry and not tarnish the image of Myanmar workers.

Despite repeated warnings, some re-entry workers brought in these restricted food items on 14 December and faced confiscation of their materials as well as fines, POEA-EPS said.

It also suggested that, in addition to the fines, other actions should be taken against them, such as blacklisting, fining, recording in the immigration files, and suspension of visa or passport renewals, after coordination upon their return.

“Warning will not work for some selfish people. There should be some kind of punishment on Myanmar side,” a Myanmar expatriate in South Korea said.

Such behaviour of ignoring the ban and bringing such food into Korea could lead to a lack of trust for  other coming Myanmar workers in the future, he added.
