DPM MoD UM focuses on Bagan heritage renovation, effective cultural preservation

The seventh meeting of the Myanmar National Cultural Central Committee and the 2/2023 meeting of the Leading Committee on Renovation of Cultural Heritage in Bagan’s World Heritage Site in progress yesterday.

State Administration Council Member Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Defence Admiral Tin Aung San attended the seventh meeting of the Myanmar National Cultural Central Committee and the 2/2023 meeting of the Leading Committee on Renovation of Cultural Heritage in Bagan’s World Heritage Site in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
The Admiral, in his capacity as Chairman of the Leading Committee, addressed the 2/2023 meeting, and the Vice- Chairman of the Leading Committee, members of the committee, and relevant departmental officials discussed the renovation of cultural heritage sites in Bagan’s World Heritage Site.
The first phase of renovating religious edifices, including 388 earthquake-hit stupas and temples in Bagan, was completed, except for Thatbyinnyu Pagoda. In contrast, the first phase of the emergency renovation of Thatbyinnyu Pagoda was also completed with the help of China.
Moreover, the systematic renovation works were conducted on 229 stupas and temples that were hit by earthquakes in 2016, floods in 2021 and Mocha.
Similarly, surveys were also conducted on 15 ancient temples that were not flooded after Mocha, and plans are underway to install lightning conductors at eleven ancient buildings.
The government signed a MoU with China to renovate Thatbyinnyu Pagoda and another with SAI (Archaeological Survey of India) to renovate 92 ancient buildings under a 10-year plan from 2018-2028.
At the seventh meeting of the Myanmar National Cultural Central Committee, the Admiral highlighted the conservation of 48 ancient heritage sites, the supervision of ancient places, buildings, and materials not disappearing and the adequate protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritages. — ASH/KTZH
