The prices of long dried chilli pepper (Moehtaung variety) and dried bell pepper are down by K5,000-10,000 per viss in Yangon’s market in the third week of October compared to those registered in the year-ago period.
Mandalay Region offers higher prices than Yangon’s. Consequently, supply to Yangon declined.
”Despite the price drop, the consumer demand is slow-moving. The market is quite sluggish this year,” Ko Hla Han, a seller of chilli pepper and tamarind in Seinpan Street of the Bayintnaung Commodity Wholesale Centre, told The Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).  New dried chilli pepper (Moehtaung) from Thazi Township fetches only K10,000 per viss in Bayintnaung market in the third week of October 2023, he added.
Moehtaung chilli peppers from Pyawbwe, Thedaw and Yamethin areas are priced at K10,000-15,000 per viss. The price of long chilli peppers from the delta region is only K6,000-8,000 per viss, according to the warehouses in Yetama and Nguwah streets.
The long chilli pepper processed in cold storage fetched K12,000-12,500 per viss on 20 October in the wholesale market, which dropped from K14,000 per viss in the previous months. The bell pepper prices are K14,000-16,000 per viss, while Sinphyukyun bell peppers processed in cold storage are priced higher at K18,500-20,000 per viss.
With the prices of chilli pepper declining in late 2023, the traders cut investment amount by K100,000-150,000 per 20-viss sack compared to that of the previous year, Ko Pyae Phyo, who sells Moehtaung chilli pepper from delta region told the GNLM. — TWA/KK
