The Taunggyi Tazaungdaing traditional hot-air balloon festival, a famous festivity in Taunggyi Township, southern Shan State, will be held from 21 to 27 November, according to the Southern Shan State Traditional Hot-air Balloon Professionals Association.
The festival will resume in November 2023 after a three-year hiatus due to the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic.
“Taunggyi Tazaungdaing festival, one of Shan State’s famous festivities, will be brought back. It will be held together with the PhaungdawU Pagoda Buddha Pujaniya festival. The festival aims to further promote tourism industry and sell local foods and utensils,” said Sai Aung Myo from the association.
This year, the traditional hot-air balloon festival will be prioritized rather than the competition format, and the initial plan is to release hot-air balloons comprising balloons with lightings at night fire, Seinnaban hot-air balloons with fireworks and the balloons in shapes of toys at day time.
The professionals launched 281 balloons at day time and 115 balloons with lighting and fireworks at night in the Taunggyi Tazaungdaing Hot-air Balloon Festival in 2019. — ASH/KZL
