China’s demand pushes up butter bean price

The prices of butter beans escalated, tracking the strong demand by China. The Mandalay commodity market saw a bustling trade activity of butter beans in the second week of September.
The price is up by K10,000-30,000 per three-basket bag on the back of an increase in China’s demand and domestic demand.
The prices tremendously rose to K365,000-390,000 per bag in the second week from K350,000-370,000 in the first week of September and K345,000-360,000 recorded last month, depending on the sizes.
The butter beans are shipped to India, China, Japan and European countries. The harvest season of this winter crop begins in early January and butter beans are abundantly harvested in February and March. The acreage of butter bean cultivation has increased to meet the growing market demand.
They are commonly grown in the central regions of Myanmar; Minbu, Sinphyukyun and Salin areas in the Magway Region, Mahlaing, Taungtha and Natogyi areas in the Mandalay Region and Gangaw, Kalay, Kal-ewa, Shwebo and Kabaw Valley in Sagaing Region. — TWA/EM
