A total of 10,000 tonnes of sugar produced in the 2023-2024 sugarcane season will be exported to Viet Nam, according to U Win Htay, Vice-Chair of Myanmar Sugar and Cane Related Products Association.
Viet Nam has offered to purchase 10,000 tonnes of Myanmar sugar in the 2023-2024 sugarcane season, and the two sides are now negotiating regarding the sugar prices and proper period of sugar production and shipment.
“They (Viet Nam) send a letter saying they want to buy our sugar. The sugar season is in December so we can sell in 2023-2024 new sugarcane season. Currently, we prioritize the local consumption,” he added.
Although the country received sugarcane and sugar demand from many foreign countries, it will export only to Viet Nam considering the local production rate and consumption.
The high foreign demand makes sugar prices increase locally. The sugar mills in northern Shan State also offer K110,000 per tonne of sugarcane and they also might increase the prices.
The country produces 450,000 tonnes of sugar per year and exports between 70,000 and 90,000 tonnes of sugar to Viet Nam yearly. Moreover, it also explores new sugarcane plantation areas and invites investors in sugarcane cultivation and sugar production. Approximately, 450,000-500,000 acres are covered by sugarcane across the country, with an annual production of 500,000 tonnes of sugar. — ASH/KTZH
