Myanmar’s earthquake rattles southern region, felt in Thailand

A powerful earthquake struck the southern coastal region of Myanmar at approximately 8 am on 19 June. The impact of the earthquake was felt in Phop Phra District of Tak Province in Thailand, as reported by the Bangkok Post news website.
According to the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the earthquake was classified as a moderate tremor measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located in the Myanmar Sea, approximately 70 miles southeast of Pyapon, at Latitude 15.50 °N, Longitude 96.33 °E.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres and was recorded at 8:10:27 MST on 19 June 2023. The Kaba Aye seismological observatory, located about 95 miles south-southeast of the epicentre, also registered seismic activity. The Weather and Earthquake Surveillance Centre in Thailand reported that the epicentre of the earthquake was located 289 kilometres southwest of Tak Province.
The tremors were felt not only in Tak Province but also in Nonthaburi and Bangkok, particularly by residents of high-rise buildings, as reported by the Bangkok Post newspaper. Additionally, on 7 June, another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale occurred in Maubin, Ayeyawady Region, resulting in the destruction of several buildings.
