Heavy rainfall damages Thanpyinswa Temple in Bagan Cultural Zone

The wall in the southern side of the Thanpyinswa Temple (Temple No 801), which is located in the north-west of West Pwasaw village in Bagan Ancient Cultural Zone of NyaungU Township, Mandalay Region, collapsed after heavy rainfall at 4 am on 31 August, U Toe Lwin, Chair of NyaungU District Administration Body.
The torrential rainfall hit Bagan Cultural Zone between 2 am and 5 am on 31 August, resulting in damages to the (17”x14”x3”) wall in the south side of Thanpyinswa Temple, said Dr Than Htike, director of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum.
Thanpyinswa Temple, which is 100 feet long, 60 feet wide and 45 feet high, is the temple without the mural paintings. It was reconstructed and donated by Suk In Wang of Yoe Lay Buddhist Sect in 2014.
The earthquake which happened on 24 August 2016 cave temple also damaged the wall on the south side of the temple somehow. The strength of the wall cannot withstand the force during the heavy rainfall on 31 August, causing the brick wall to collapse.
Chairman U Toe Lwin, U Nan Tint, township administrator, Dr Than Htike, director of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum and other officials concerned inspected and observed the collapse of the temple. — KPD/GNLM
