The ceremony was attended by Union Minister U Myint Kyaing, Deputy Minister U Htay Hlaing, Permanent Secretary U Aung Kyaw Soe and officials from the respective ministries and invitees.
Union Minister U Myint Kyaing explained the celebration of World Population Day. The world has a population of about 7,900 million, today, and is projected to reach about 8,500 million by 2030. Most developing countries are facing many subsequent challenges due to the rapid growth of the population and the World Population Day celebrations have been held annually since 1990 in various parts of the world to draw special attention to the issues related to the population that must be addressed as a matter of priority.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has set the theme for World Population Day based on the current population and health needs, and Myanmar has set this year’s theme as “Promoting Reproductive Health for a Better World”, aiming to promote reproductive health education and services and ensure the full health and rights of all citizens, including women and girls.
The Union Minister said Myanmar has a population of over 55 million and is projected to reach 60 million by 2030. He continued the need to effectively use the power of the youth in the development projects of the country and to prepare for the strengthening of the social security system for the elderly in the future, urging all human beings to respond systematically to COVID-19 and to promote reproductive health for the betterment of the planet.
Afterwards, the Director-General of the Population Department presented the implementation in relation to the theme of World Population Day and the Union Minister and those present at the ceremony watched the video clip in commemoration of World Population Day. —MNA
