14-year-old girl slipped and died between rocks at Sinywa Waterfall in Mon State, body retrieved hours later

A 14-year-old girl slipped and died between the rocks at Sinywa waterfall, an attractive tourist destination in Mon State, and her body was recovered several hours later, according to the Parahita associations that participated in the body retrieval.

The incident of two people falling off the waterfall happened at 2:15 pm on 21 July at the Sinywa waterfall near Sinywa village in Paung township while the victim who was having her photo taken tried to pull up her friend who slipped halfway down the waterfall.

“The one who slipped reached the bottom, but the deceased died after getting stuck between the rocks. She died because she couldn’t get out. They tried to rescue her, but couldn’t pull her out. Then the aid organizations and officials came,” a local explained to the Global New Light of Myanmar.

The search and rescue team headed by U Myat Ko, staff officer of the Paung Township Fire Services Department went to the scene of the incident. They found the dead body stuck between the rocks, and tied her hands to prevent it from being washed away as they couldn’t pull her out. Finally, the body was retrieved in the morning of 22 July and taken to the Paung Township General Hospital.

The victim was a 14-year-old Grade IX student from Nyaungkone village in Mudon township, and her friend who fell together with the victim got only minor bruises.
