Kamamo pagoda festival showcases ornamental bullock cart competition of Mon tradition

The Kamamo Pagoda festival included an ornamental bullock cart competition on 22 April, according to the committee overseeing the competition.

This traditional event, cherished by the Mon people, aimed to honour their custom of travelling to the Bilukyun Pagoda festival in elaborately decorated bullock carts.

U Min Aung Ngwe, a committee member, explained, “Participants adorned their carts, accompanied by women dressed in traditional Mon clothing. Although previous years saw numerous entries, only four carts took part this year.”

Chaungzon Township, situated in Mon State, encompasses 64 villages, including Kamamo Village, each of which holds its own pagoda festival starting from the first day of Thingyan annually. The festival at Kamamo Village features this competition every year.

Participants commenced their journey from a designated point, heading towards the Winlae Nyinaung Pagoda located south of the village before returning. Throughout the route, judges evaluated various aspects such as the cows, carts, attire, demeanour, and posture of the participants. Each category could earn a maximum of ten points.
