Chinese cabbages are being sold at a market.

As a result of high demand, price of Chinese cabbage has increased after Thingyan festival, according to the vegetable market.

“Chinese cabbage price was K400-K500 a viss before Thingyan and now K1500. The supply has been low and demand has been high, so the price goes up nearly triple,” said an official from vegetable wholesale centre.

It is predicted to continue rising in price until May and such fluctuation in price causes many difficulties for farmers and vegetable traders, said traders.

“It is expected that the price will go up until May. When there is an influx of supply, price will plunge down again. We need to carefully handle this market,” said a farmer.

Although Chinese cabbage can be grown anywhere, it is mostly planted in areas which have moderate climate. It is included in cabbage species and likes cold weather. Chinese cabbage is grown throughout the year in areas with moderate rain level.
